Era vs Era Tournament 00s vs 10s - TheTeddyBear - 04-25-2018 01:43 AM

Alright the John Ruiz post got me thinking, what would happen if you take the top 10 from 2006( roughly the middle of what people call the weakest heavyweight era) vs the top 10 from 2018( a heavyweight division people openly bash) and put them in a seeded tournament?

1.Wladimir Klitschko vs 10.Adam Kownacki
2.Oleg Maskaev vs 9.Dominic Brezeale
3.Samuel Peter vs 8.Jarrell Miller
4.James Toney vs 7.Joseph Parker
5.Shannon Briggs vs 6.Dillian Whyte
6.Serguei Lyakhovich vs 5.Luis Ortiz
7.Lamon Brewster vs 4.Kubrat Pulev
8.Nikolay Valuev vs 3.Alexander Povetkin
9.Ruslan Chagaev vs 2.Deontay Wilder
10.John Ruiz vs 1.Anthony Joshua

How would that first round shake out and how do you think the tourney would play out from there?

2006 top 10 is from April 2007 Ring Magizine and Current top 10 is Via boxrec.

Interesting - looking at those I don’t think the standard is much different between the two eras.

I think through to the second round we get:

Klitschko
Breazeale
Peter
Parker
Briggs
Ortiz
Pulev
Povetkin
Wilder
Joshua

I’d say Klit goes on to win it vs Wilder or Joshua in the final.

Wow, you think Ruiz takes out Joshua?

I basically have it going with the rankings/seedings tbh. No upsets. From 1-10 you dont really have a big difference in standards between these eras IMO. The only possible upset would maybe be Brewster v Pulev but would it really be an upset.... Probably not. And at vest its 50/50. .

Not a given and can see someone saying AJ based on beating Klitschko who is bigger, more skilled and powerful than Ruiz. It's a style thing where I feel Ruiz would beat AJ on the inside and be able to stand up and make it a grueling fight for the young Joshua.

How do you see the fight looking black?

I won't go into full detail but Miller v Peter would be a super fun fight for 5 rounds.

Viper I just think that if Valuev was able to keep Ruiz at bay then Joshua would have no probs. Ruiz would give him a few uncomfortable moments but I reckon Joshua would control the range for the most part and use his sheer physical strength to boss the fight.

Well I'm not gonna lie. I never saw the Valuev-Ruiz fight so I can't comment much on that. However I assume Valuev's size had alot to do with getting the decision (like all of his wins) which AJ is big but not on the scale of Valuev.

How do you see John Ruiz & Tyson Fury going down?

A younger Wlad wins it.
