Floyd Wins $446,000 on a Single Bet - salvador - 09-17-2012 07:22 PM

Floyd apparently bet $446,000 on the Ravens to cover a 2.5 point spread against the Eagles this weekend and won. It really is amazing the degree to which that guy seems to sincerely hate money. Seeing all these former boxers come back into the ring after they have retired is depressing enough, but watching Floyd run on 45 year old legs might actually be enough to turn me off of boxing.

Didn't he have some HUGE losses in the past couple of weeks, that are more than this winning?

Nobody who gambles over the long run can ever beat the casino spreads. It's statistically impossible. The fact that he's betting so much is evidence that he's a degenerate gambler. Totally pitiful.

And gamblers are like stockbrokers - they only tell you about the winners.

I feel sorry for some fighter who go down the wrong path. Can't say I do or will feel sorry for 'Money' Mayweather. I think it will be very fitting to see. If he does go down that path, it couldn't happen to a better fighter.
He forever has been arrogant, spoilt, acts like a petulant child, brags about his money, throws it around, he said fighting for 'millions' of dollars (before he really became somebody) was slave wages.

If this does happen, this should be the least depressing 'tragic' boxing story and should not be the one that turns you off boxing. I feel sorry and have felt sorry for countless other fighters, but Floyd won't be one of them.

I completely understand that sentiment, but it doesn't make it any less tragic for his kids and for him. It's predictable without the gambling (entourage, 20 Bentleys ect.), but the fact that it was almost like he was predestined to be broke is just so pitiful.

There's a book by Kurt Vonnegut where there's a lake and on one side there is a college and the other there is a prison. The college is famous for an incredible computer that, based on all the data you input about your circumstances at birth, will tell you with 100% certainty what will happen to you in life. Of course there is a prison break and a bunch of prisoners end up holed up at the university with this computer. And they all input all their circumstances at birth (race, parents' income, status act.) and the machine keeps spitting out the same message: "you will spend your life in jail." That's how I think of Floyd. I can't get around the fact that (I believe this is true) his father was once carrying him on his shoulders and Floyd Sr. got shot as part of a drug deal (again, I might be totally wrong, but at the very least he was completely impoverished and surrounded with ex-cons).

Anyway, Floyd's grandkids should be Rockefellers and instead they will be destitute. Just so predictable and sad.

If Floyd didn't go so far out of his way to market himself as this flashy high-living superstar who "makes it rain" by throwing hundred dollar bills around and by buying $250K cars on 24/7 and by flaunting his 6 man security team it wouldn't be an issue. But he does. And if he didn't want journalists or guys like us talking about it on boards like this, then he wouldn't have allowed the journalist to photograph and publish his gambling stub. But he did. He wants us to talk about it. It's just that he wants us to talk about how awesome it must be to be him and about how awesome it must be to live the high life rather than having us point out how incredibly stupid it is.

The only reason I brought it up was because gambling $466K on a single football game is beyond flashy, it's borderline hateful to his kids.

78% of all NFL players are bankrupt within two years of retiring from the NFL. 60% of NBA players are bankrupt within 5 years of leaving the NBA. It's an epidemic in sports and Floyd personifies that stupidity and probably encourages other athletes to do the same stupid things. And that's why I do think the subject is thread worthy - particularly if you care about the athletes.

I can say as a recovering compulsive gambler that it is truly a disease & it is all relative to his worth. The amounts he gambles are minor % wise to the amounts I used to gamble when in active addiction. Trust me it will get much worse & I will always remember what a good friend of mine who has the trifecta of addiction & a much worse upbringing told me

I can shoot $3-500 worth of heroin a day before I pass out or OD
I can drink $2-300 worth of booze a day before I collapse
I bet $500 on the first race at Randwick & there are another 40 major & 80 minor races to go before the greyhounds & trots start as well as hit the pokies/slots.

I may hate Floyd but if he is a gambling addict he is so full of ego he will NEVER seek help until it is too late. Do not be surprised to read he kills himself one day. When he is all alone with nothing left sitting in his batcave & even Robin has fucked off because he can't handle the depression he will bite down on blued steel.

This man needs to loose everything to find himself. If he can come back from the insanity is another story altogether.

This is where we differ.

I'd love nothing more than watching Mayweather get iced a la Uncle Roger against Rocky Lockridge a few times.

And by a few, I mean 20.

Floyd posted this on Twitter. HE WANTS US TO TALK ABOUT IT.

He will absolutely be broke within 5 years (probably sooner) and it will be pitiful. $1.1MM on a regular season college football game isn't just the sign of a degenerate gambler, it's the opening scene of a really bitter/tragic/hilarious comedy.

Does the IRS tax huge Vegas winnings?
