Mosley or Toney - who had the best career?

AfricanAmericanBelt, this was never a question of which fighter had the better career. It's a mythical match up between the two. Some people think Mosley's body of work at 135 is enough to secure him a win. That's what the issue has been. We don't buy it.

I made a post about it. I think Toney is a bad style match up for Mosley.

Toney. If he can bring Burger King to its knees then Mosley aint gonna trouble him.

Personally I can see Toney ultimately being the better fighter and would work Mosley out as the fight went along, so I agree, Gravy.


But I do think Mosley is in danger of being a little underrated (in his prime, at least), and I do think he'd start fast and win many of the early rounds before Toney caught him up. Even in Toney's prime he came very close to losing a few decisions to lesser fighters than Shane just due to his lack of workrate and slow starts.

I think that the example you gave, Oscar Shane vs Body Snatcher Toney, would give Shane the best situation to win. Shane was almost perfect that fight, and Toney had some struggles with McCallum in their first fight.

Toney had weight issues for a long time. He'd weigh over 200 pounds between fights at 168. He lost 46 pounds in 6 weeks to fight RJJ. I wouldn't be surprised if he'd weight issues at 160 too.

I think Shane would win rounds against Toney, Shane just stylistically and mentally wouldn't win. Even if he'd a lot of confidence and threw a lot of punches a sluggish Toney could absorb shots, be elusive and hit Shane with shots he doesn't see coming. Then he'd be the Mosley that fights tight and can't get off.

Toney was far more skilled, far more entertaining, far more interesting...and he didn't close his eyes and swing wildly.
