Gov't intervention during the crisis was necessary to keep the financial system from collapsing. Basically the fed and treasury guaranteed over $100TR of derivatives at 100 cents on the dollar to keep the system from imploding.

What the gov't didn't need to do was keep the equity holders at the banks from going to zero and it didn't need to guarantee that the derivatives holders (particularly the credit default swaps that banks never should have been allowed to write in the first place) get paid in full. That was totally corrupt and unfair to the tax payers.

Keeping interest rates at zero for this long has been a huge mistake. Basically the gov't is repricing dollars to keep the system afloat.

Once the world realizes that the US politicians have no interest in preserving the integrity of the dollar Americans are going to realize what an incredible privilege it has been to have had the world's reserve currency. Too bad we won't be able to get it back in our lifetimes.

Well printing $1 trillion for 3 years barely did a thing while running $trillion deficits at the same time! I think we should have had no bailout, no printing of money and balanced budgets! We need production and saving...not spending and more crony capitalism! At this rate the government is just causing another bubble! It's a fact of Keynesian economics!

I would argue that the dollar has become weak by design, as a way to make exports cheaper and imports more expensive, among other issues.

Oh, and you posted 45 minutes of video. I'm not going to burn up that much data on an internet argument.

You are totally right.

But even more than wanting competitive exports, the gov't wants a lower dollar because the entire system has been built on debt and the game is to keep paying back debt with cheaper dollars (both gov't and private). These debts have to get easier to repay over time so that we can both repay the debts and we can still have the capacity to borrow more and keep growing at any cost.

As long as the gov't can grow the money supply at 15% a year while convincing the markets that the inflation rate is 2% a year it is going to do it.
