Thanks for the suggestions. I did not know any of these songs. I'm digging Miles Davis, Ahmad Jahmal, Coltrane, Brook Benton...did you know Miles Davis has a song named Will O The Wisp? Wonder if it has anything to do w/ Willie Pep What you guys posted is just what I had in mind...thanks....feels great to know of these artists. TEAM BLACK |

I went back and forth on "The Best of Cannonball Adderly: The Capitol Years" because it's not available on ITunes. You can get it on CD on Amazon.com and I highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you like jazz. In particular. "Mercy Mercy Mercy" and "Why Am I Treated So Bad" are as good as it gets for any kind of music - but you have to get these songs LIVE.
A lot of jazz is like blues in that it's much better/more authentic live than canned in a studio. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but for the most part the best jazz is live. Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" (along with Doo Bop) is another exception to the rule. Also, "Eyes of the World" by the Grateful Dead with Brandford Marsalis from The Grateful Dead's "Without A Net" is pretty amazing. Again, there are tons of versions of this song on ITunes, but the only one that is worth getting is this particular one thanks to Branford's amazing sax. |

Miles Davis's song "Will O the Wisp" is about Pep Big G. It's on his album Skethes Of Spain (great album done with a Spanish orchestra.)
He also has songs called "Sugar Ray" (after his friend Robinson), "Duran", "Johnny Bratton", "Archie Moore" & "Ali". Those are all on his complete sessions to the Tribute to Jack Johnson album (one of my all time favs). Yup, Miles Davis was a big boxing fan & hit the gym himself at times! |
