My Recent Boxing Projects
So I've been MIA from the boards for the past few months working on some boxing related projects that have recently been getting some recognition out there in some contests, so I thought I'd share it with you fellas. I don't know how many of you guys know this about me, but back in 2008 I went on a journey for 18 months, traveling and fighting through boxing gyms throughout Latin America. Now it's kind of morphed into this huge life project where I just write and photograph stories about boxing and how boxing has changed lives for the better. Here's a short list of some of recent awards I've snatched.

1) Earlier in 2012, I was placed in the top ten nominations in a narrative magazine for a photo essay about that trip. It's mentioned here:

http://narrativemagazine.com/node/197626 (no photos though)

The photos that won can be seen here on my newly launched website under the essay "Sacrifice":

http://www.wanderingpugilist.com/sacrifice

2) At the end of last year, I won one of five first place prizes for the National Geographic/Nikon "Full Story" contest for a story I shot about my friend and sparring partner in a gym here in Seattle. It just went live today and I'd love to hear what you guys think. It's the one called "The Fighting Preacher":

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/nikon/fullstory.html

3) I'm taking a chance with this one because you'll get to hear my voice and see a goofy picture of me, but it's kind of the essence of this project, and well, I kinda like you assholes lol This last year I was part of a writer's group that gave readings around WA state where I always read something boxing related, and was very touched to have someone afterward always come up to me and say, "You know, I always thought boxing was just this violent sport, but now I look at it differently."

http://jackstraw.org/blog/?p=426

Oh and some of my work was made into a song, which was a huge honor for me and especially for the boxers whose interview quotes were made into lyrics on another continent. This one I'm really taking a chance of getting some jokes cuz I fucked up this reading all over the place:

Finally, I've been getting ready to move to Brazil at the end of Feb to live in Rio de Janeiro and work with a non-profit organization that uses boxing to combat youth involvement in the drug trade. It's been a huge dream of mine to work with them and it's taken me three years to finally get some funding to sponsor me over there. The organization is called "Fight for Peace" and they do some really good work.

So yeah, that's where I've been these past 6 months really. If you guys would like to keep up with my work and trips, I just put together a new website that I'd be more than happy to share with you guys:

http://www.wanderingpugilist.com

Kind of the point of the project is to change the opinion on boxing and put a human story on the sport. And honestly, a larger goal for me is to be part of this "Fight for Peace" movement of building boxing gyms around the world. It's been a huge trip for me, and well, you guys may not have known it, but my time spent on the boards, from Boxingtalk to here on Boxing Unfiltered has greatly influenced the way I write and the way I see the sport of boxing, so I kinda owe a lot of the recent success to you guys. Thanks for all the support fellas.

All heart. That's what most little guys are.
But that counts for a lot. In the gym or
the ring all you gotta do is get up
one more time than the other guy thinks you can.

Great work Nick. Really, I mean it. The photos on your site are impressive. And the fighting preacher story was put together really well.

What lenses do you use? I have a Nikon and really like the high contrast/low light pics that you took. I'd post the examples, but some dickhead locked his website. lol

Great work Snoop, really great work. Looks like this has been a great experience for you, and as we all have an interest in boxing here, I think any of us would have loved to experience the type of journey you went on, and seen the things you saw.

I haven't gone through everything just yet, but I saw the pictures and listened to your friends story "The Fighting Preacher" that went live today and I thought it was a very good story and can see how boxing had helped him through some pretty challenging times.

The photos of the places you visited are pretty amazing and some really, really good shots in there.

I also listened to your audio and this was really good. Just hearing about the experiences and about your journey. I also laughed about how you originally told some of the guys that you're writing a book, and the next time you were there, they were asking on where they can read their stories, lol.
You're a very well spoken dude.

Congrats on the great work Snoop, and it shows in your work that you're doing something your passionate about. Good luck with the rest of your journey and look forward to seeing some more in the future.

Pop around from time to time, we don't wanna lose you and look for another token asian to replace you lol

Nice Work, Snoop. Awesome. I bought a Canon 60D 3 years ago, and two BAD ASS "L-Series" lenses. I shoot sports every chance I get (for fun, not work). Went to Flyers/Panthers game last night w the big boy lens and got a bunch of great shots.

I love the Fighting Preacher.

"I'm a warrior. I'll shed blood before I'll shed tears."

And the photos from Latin America are amazing. Real profiles in fortitude. And as sad as the dirt floor boxing ring seems, it's also kind of awesome and natural. It's really important to be reminded of the big truth in the world which is that 44 years after we landed on the moon 40% of the world is still living without electricity or running water.

Congrats on a totally worthwhile project!

Thank you fellas for all the support and congrats. And I really meant it, this community has been a huge platform and anchor to learn about the sport of boxing and develop my work (as must as ya'll might hate to hear it, I owe a lot to FH to be honest). Looking forward to sharing other works with ya'll and I'm still lurking around reading all the ridiculousness that goes on around here. lol

Yeah what a fucking asshole.

lol

Which pics were you talking about? The photo essay or "The Fighting Preacher"?

The photos in the essay were a mix between a D80 and a D40. For the D80, I was either using a 18-135 kit lens or a 50mm f/1.4 (very affordable and a must-have for any photographer IMO, amateur or professional) with a SB600 Speedlight for some of the shots. For the D40, it was just a straight 18-55 kit lens. I was surprised at the quality of a kit lenses, even on a shitty intro model like a D40.

The photos for "The Fighting Preacher" were all done with a Nikon D600. The lenses were either a 24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8 or 14-24mm f/2.8 (nice lens but fucking expensive; I rented it). If you have any specific pic, I can tell you the exact setup I used and even the metadata if you'd like.

All heart. That's what most little guys are.
