Rate these fighters in order of greatness
Pool A
1 - Whitaker
2 - Hopkins
3 - Jones Jr
4 - Mayweather
5 - Chavez
6 - Pacquiao

Pool B
1 - Lewis
2 - Holyfield
3 - Morales
4 - Marquez
5 - Barrera
6 - Toney
7 - DLH
8 - Tyson
9 - Mosley
10 - Trinidad
11 - Wright
12 - Calzaghe
13 - Vargas

I know I explained it before, but my reasoning on the groups was that if I was to ask people who the 1 best fighter from the last 25 years was, I think the majority of the time it would be 1 of the fighters from pool A.
I don't see many from pool B get singled out as the one best fighter of the generation. Pool A was just the most common names I see thrown around for the #1 best.

The hardest I had problems with was #1 in pool A. I was tossing up between Whitaker/Hopkins/Jones. I agree with JD though, that Whitaker seems to get under appreciated. You could argue that his first loss was against DLH or Trinidad. That says a lot.

Toney also should belong with Hopkins, Whitaker, Jones and Mayweather. He is absolutely elite and is on par with those guys in terms of skills and talent. Like mentioned, it was discipline that let him down. Awesome fighter her was.

I tried to think of the best fighters, not sure if I missed any key names from the last 25 years.

Toney's struggles with guys who could move (Montell, Roy) and even guys who he knocked out (Nunn) but still struggled with bad, are why I wouldn't have him in pool A. The man was an absolute beast if you came at him, as good as any before him and he proved this when he fought the larger fighters. But the movers and boxers troubled him given his slow legs.

I realise his loved on this board though, so I'll do my best to hop into his style defense and roll to the side.

Fitz Wrote:I've tried to break them into two categories as pool A I think are the ones that most will consider the greatest of the more recent times. But if there is a fighter in pool B that you think is better than anyone in pool A, then just add that fighter to the pool A list.

Pool A
  • Chavez
  • Whitaker
  • Hopkins
  • Jones Jr
  • Mayweather
  • Pacquiao

Pool B
  • Toney
  • Morales
  • Barrera
  • DLH
  • Marquez
  • Trinidad
  • Mosley
  • L.Lewis
  • Tyson
  • Holyfield
  • Wright
  • Vargas
  • Calzaghe

A prime Erik Morales was a better fighter than Manny Pacquiao, and I'd rank Evander Holyfield above both of them, both in terms of career acheivements and as an overall fighter.

Manny forced most of his big names to suck down to fight him. Evander spent most of his career fighting in a weight class above the one he should have been fighting in.

I forgot to add Tszyu in there. I know he wouldn't be high amongst those names, but he belongs there and can be in front of a few names on the lower end.
I would have put him at 11. After Trinidad and before Wright.

Edit: I also would like to add the Klitschko's

Pool A
1 - Whitaker
2 - Hopkins
3 - Jones Jr
4 - Mayweather
5 - Chavez
6 - Pacquiao

Pool B
1 - Lewis
2 - Holyfield
3 - Morales
4 - Marquez
5 - Barrera
6 - Toney
7 - DLH
8 - Tyson
9 - Mosley
10 - Trinidad
11- Tszyu (inclusion)
12- W. Klitschko (inclusion)
13- V. Klitschko (inclusion)
14 - Wright
15 - Calzaghe
16 - Vargas

Toney
Tyson
Mosley

Trinidad
Tszyu

(I understand the reasoning for making a pool A & pool B section as most people from pool A would be considered the best from this era by majority. However the more I think about it, the more I'm unimpressed with Mayweathers career).
