Consequences of the World Cup 2014 - Brazil
Ok, I know this board has a lot of football fans and with the World Cup just two days away, I figure there'd be a lot of excitement and discussion regarding the games. But after living here in Rio for a little over a year and really considering this place home, I can't help but be disgusted by the things I've read and personally witnessed that are none other than concrete consequences of these games. I'm not trying to shit on this event or bring down the tone of high-spirited competition, but I figure if you're going to enjoy something, it's worth knowing the cost of the enjoyment.

Here are a few articles outlining the situation:

On how Brazilians feel

On the protests

(Some of these were taken last year)

On rising crime rates

On the numbers

Pretty much sums it up with a clever meme

Here are a couple videos as well:

And finally, this is why the whole situation is fucked up, summed up in one picture:

İmage

All heart. That's what most little guys are.
But that counts for a lot. In the gym or
the ring all you gotta do is get up
one more time than the other guy thinks you can.

I know that many countries that host World Cups (and Olympics) suffer big time in the long run. Many people put focus on the short term benefits of a big event for these countries. But once everything if packed up and finished..

I remember when the Olympics came to Atlanta, we protested the shit out of it. As a result, the amount of money the city/state was going to put in it had to be scaled back drastically as a result.

When I told that to my acquaintances in China around 2008ish, as their government was spending BILLIONS, one of the responses was, "Oh, Chinese people would never protest against it."

I said "You don't have the right to protest it." Got nothing in return but a red-faced smile.

Mega events like the World Cup, and moreso the Olympics, are nothing but imagined face-gaining activities for under-developed 3rd world shit holes looking to have their 15 minutes on the world stage.

Pretty much. The rich and powerful in this country got arrogant and thought, "World Cup? Yeah. Olympics? Yeah. Bring 'em both on, cuz we're THAT great." Too bad they've now fucked their country for generations to come. Sad thing is, they'll probably be okay, maybe even better off.

Walrord's right. These countries are in shambles, socially speaking, and yet the governments have no qualms about spending billions in order to create a mirage.

I'm not surprised that the event will take place anyway. World Cup 1978 took place in Argentina during a dictatorship where citizens were being sent to concentration camps, and the event still went on.

Shit, watch that video I just posted. Funny as hell. They mention the 2022 World Cup being held in Qatar, where it gets to like 50ºC in the summer. WTF? Not to mention that there is like a modern-day slave state going on there. Yeah, shit just gets shadier and shadier...

FIFA is rife with corruption Snoop. RIFE. It is an organisation beyond repair. The Qatar thing being the most blatant example yet seen.

Then why continue supporting the organization?

No one supports fifa that i know of. Thats like saying we as boxing fans support the WBC or Bob Arum etc. Theu are just an unfortunate part of the game. Football fans support the players in the jersey.
