Even after the jab Ray would lunge a lot of the time, either with the right to the head or to the body (including that kidney shot).

I'm not saying lunging is bad, it helps to generate a lot of power. As long as you aren't out of position and lunging, I don't see a problem with it - particularly if you have speed. Some of the greatest technical fighters (Robinson and Rigondeaux) lunge a lot with their big shots.
