Lou Duva passes away at 94
All heart. That's what most little guys are. But that counts for a lot. In the gym or the ring all you gotta do is get up one more time than the other guy thinks you can. - Gabrielle Calvocoressi http://www.wanderingpugilist.com |

RE: Lou Duva passes away at 94
Had some great great fighters under his command, and they usually looked spectacular. I always thought he was one of the greatest trainers around. But he was the one that got most of the attention for the behind the scenes work of Georgie Benton.

I ended up writing a piece on Lou Duva and in researching his life, that was one hell of a guy. I'd love to hear more anecdotes about him. All heart. That's what most little guys are. RE: Lou Duva passes away at 94
I don't really have anecdotes to add Snoop. I just know that Duva was always the guy up in the ring shouting, making noise, while in the gym, Benton was the master who really schooled the fighters. Lou knew how good Benton was and so bought him in to grow Main Events by purely focusing on the training of its boxers.
Some stories, Benton was always known as a bit of a boxing genius, with the quirks that came with it, but I don't have any that you wouldn't be able to find online as per below (I've only spoken to historians who are always unanimous in their opinions that it was Benton that made Lou's fighters): http://www.si.com/vault/1992/11/02/12748...t-fighters "Benton's stories—you can't even repeat the best ones, says Lou Duva, because "you'd get Georgie thrown in jail or shot by a jealous husband"—are about the juke joints, the all-night parties, the women, the swells, the high life in Philly. He'll tell you that he has fathered 11 children—nine out of wedlock—that boxing has made him a millionaire and that he's the "luckiest man in the world." All night long he'll go on, but if you stay with him long enough, he might get right in your face and whisper that nobody gets close to George Benton—nobody, no man and especially no woman. He says that he hangs with nobody, depends on nobody, because he has had his heart broken enough, and the man beyond heartbreak is the man who goes alone. |

Good shit ATN. I love SI vault. Here's a piece I found on Duva when I was researching my piece:

Absolutely, the writing is brilliant.
haha, that Duva one is hilarious. There is one thing for sure about Duva and the guys he hang around, they were as colourful as you get! A year hanging with them would grant you as many experiences as a lifetime hanging with most men! |

Duva is one hell of a character. Any guy that will trade blows with Roger Mayweather or bum rush the entourage of the other corner on behalf of his fighter is alright in my book.
