RE: HBO drops Boxing
This is pretty big news..& pretty sad too, but appropriate. Which HBO fighters do they have left? Kovalev & GGG?

Apparently there was a final scene to GoT episode that costed more than the entire years budget HBO had for boxing.

Also apparently alot of the people on HBO are on just as big if not bigger pays than the fighters themselves & no one wants to take pay cuts for the boxing budget.

RE: HBO drops Boxing
That's probably normal in most organizations. Executives and the big business people on more money than the stars.

GGG and Canelo are free.

I think GGG goes DAZN.

Game of Thrones > Kovalev vs some Eastern European for a WBO belt any day.

RE: HBO drops Boxing
People at HBO are putting in more work than some promoter giving us exhibition fights. Canelo-Golovkin 2 really didnt even sell. Boxing is dying out. Next thing you know the shit will be on a casino show level like washed up singers

My bad..not the executives, but Lampley & Kellerman wouldn't take cuts to increase the boxing budget.

It may not be a surprise to others but I was surprised that they earn more than the fighters.

RE: HBO drops Boxing
For how grumpy and old Merchant was, HBO boxing never came close to replacing him

In many ways his departure was the first indication of the pending slide.

RE: HBO drops Boxing
So...what is HBO's folding an indication of?

HBO's mismanagement of the product?

American boxing in decline?

Boxing in general in decline?

RE: HBO drops Boxing
A combination of all three and then some. As JD mentioned, HBO gets subs from GoT and other shows. If they need to trim the fat, boxing is the first place to start. There is little profit in it for them now, especially considering the lack of names that can draw in casuals. We aren't in the 90's anymore, which was boxing's heyday in many ways.
