And Spyder I disagree that showing these cuts adds any value to the "event" that you'd get being there live. Live you'd never see any of these family members unless you're seated ringside. To me it adds no value to the telecast but rather takes away from it.

I have no problem with them showing the family before the fight during the anthems or whatever or doing a little family piece prior to the fight. During the fight it in my view only detracts from the bout, ESPECIALLY when it happens a half dozen times per fight which is easily the case recently.

Going back to the Chavez fight for example, there must have been at least 20 times that we saw either Chavez' pops, his wife, or Martinez' brother. What did any of those cuts do for us as the viewer? I would much rather have had 20 more listens in Chavez' or Martinez' corner to see/hear what was going on there. None of the family cuts were value-adding. Maybe seeing Chavez Sr. yell once (emotion) at his son/corner, I'll give you that. But Chavez' wife and Martinez' brother were useless, time wasting images.

The recording I watched had all of the between round stuff cut out, so I can't speak to any particular instance from that fight. But what I can speak to is generally speaking, reaction shots of people of significance adds value to a telecast. Whether it's a celebrity, family member, rival...those reaction shots have a distinct purpose. Now, maybe in this particular case, there were shots taken that didn't make sense. Maybe the Director was anticipating a stronger reaction when he called for the shot. Maybe there was a great reaction that he was just late on grabbing, so instead you see the aftermath of someone just sitting there.

It is a skill and takes talent to get it right. Not everyone is as good as the next guy. When you get it right however, it translates the emotion to the viewer and engulfs them into whatever it is you are trying to convey.

Just out of interest, what kind of stuff do you direct? Anything i might have seen?

You need to ask yourself if directing a concert for rod stewart is worth slowing down your activities on an online boxing forum....
