Things not thread worthy
If Tszyu mentally wasn't in the game any longer I agree that retirement was the way to go. However, he was a young 35. He hadn't been in a lot of wars or taken a lot of damage. He looked excellent in all of his fights leading up to the Hatton loss, so saying he was past his best is speculative. Also while he was behind on all 3 cards it was a close fight and a fight that on a different night could have gone a different way, with a different ref, etc. Don't forget that Tszyu opened as a 5-2 favorite to win that fight with the odds still being a solid 2-1 as fight week hit.
Tszyu was a much more complete fighter than Hatton, and had they had a rematch (especially in the states) I'd have picked Tszyu to decision Hatton. Ricky was and always will be one dimensional. Tszyu could have made the necessary adjustments to be more effective in the rematch where Ricky would have come out doing the same thing he always does. I guess my point is that Tszyu in my view physically was just fine; his skills and abilities were great when he retired... it was just mentally that you have to question, especially considering how the Hatton fight ended and his retirement following it. |
