Things not thread worthy
You didn't say way past his best but you dropped Holyfield and Jones' names which are two guys way past their best, so in my view you were suggesting it. Tszyu looked unstoppable in his fights leading up to the Hatton fight and no one indicated that he was past his best. Again, Tszyu was favored to win the Hatton fight which suggests that no one (relatively speaking) felt he was past his best going into that fight. Sure in hindsight it's easy to come on here and suggest otherwise following the Hatton defeat. And I don't care if a fighters corner "pulls their fighter out" of a fight or they verbally quit themselves - unless the fighter argues with his corner or shows the desire to continue that's as good as verbally quitting in my book.
Tszyu hanging them up after the Hatton loss would be like Marquez hanging them up after the Chris John loss or Hopkins hanging them up after the Taylor loss. Both guys were 35-40 at the time (same age range as Tszyu) and had a solid career up until that point. Both however had not significantly slipped in the skill/ability department. Both continued their careers and went on to accomplish HUGE things. I believe that Tszyu, like those guys who had low mileage for a fighter his age could have gone on to accomplish greater things. Yes it is all speculation and open for debate and obviously it was his choice and the right one for him at that time. That doesn't change the fact that IMO he achieved less than he could of had he continued a few more years. |
