RE: Things not thread worthy
Paul Magno estimates in his column today that Spence-Crawford would only do about 500-600K ppv buys and so it's not worth it for the fight to be made because both guys can make so much more fighting lesser guys.
That's obviously what the promoters think as well, and they would obviously know more than I would about it. But I can't help but believe that at this point the fans are so starved for a genuine elite mega fight that Spence-Crawford would do far better than anyone expects - not to mention the potential for a second or third fight. Covid has opened a once in a lifetime window for something huge and Spence-Crawford is about as big an elite fight as boxing can do right now (elite is different than Canelo-TBD or any of the HWs). I also think that the promoters need to wake up to the fact that the casual fans who are the marginal buyers of the megafights really are just as happy buying Paul-Woodley or Tyson-Jones if there's no better alternative - and that trend has legs. And so ultimately it's in PBC's and Top Rank's interest to make it happen. I'm nearing the end of my patience for boxing at this point as it's completely insane that the only real top level fight we've had in the past 18 months was Lopez-Loma and it's even more insane that Crawford-Porter is the best chance we have for an even moderately worthy PPV fight out there. Thank God for football. |
