BGv4.0 - I'm not sure I remember exactly the mid-south promotion you're talking about, but I do remember watching UWF around 1986-87, which was a southern promotion that sounds very similar and may have been the incarnation that ultimately made its way to local networks up in Chicago.

Watching UWF was where I got introduced to Dr. Death Steve Williams, Ted DiBiase, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Terry Taylor, The Freebirds (Terry Gordy, Michael Hayes & Buddy Roberts), Eddie Gilbert, Sting and Rick Steiner, Hollywood John Tatum and Jack Victory, as well as the One Man Gang. Not to mention Jim Ross on the mic. Terry Gordy was the champ, then Williams, then OMG. Eventually Big Bubba pinned OMG for the belt (they would later go on to be tag team partners in WWF). Bubba prior to that had been Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express's bodyguard I think. It was around that time that NWA bought out UWF and they merged at Starrcade 87: Chi-Town Heat, which I sat in the second row for.

That stuff was so raw and unpredictable. WWF was my mainstay of course but I got such a thrill back then watching those other leagues. Very comparable to that wife/mistress analogy I've seen other people use for boxing and UFC.

Anyone remember Honey Bee and her late night wrestling show SMASH? She'd show classic AWA and WCCW matches featuring the Freebirds, Von Erichs, Road Warriors, Dingo Warrior, Nick Bockwinkle, Stan Hansen, Abdullah the Butcher, Bruiser Brody...

I know that Baush sold it off and it did move around....so it might have became what you are talking about....it's the same dudes that's for sure.

I just picked up a super cheap "Best of Abdullah the Butcher" dvd on Ebay for $10....2 discs (burned bootlegs of course)....but it has some AMAZING mathces on there. Abdullah Vs. Andre the Giant...Abdullah Vs. Hulk Hogan....these are very early matches before Hogan and Andre were WWF stars.

AND...there is a bunch of Abdullah/Carlos Calon fights on there from Purto Rico....and there was a time where Abdullah was pretty damn thin....kind of shocked me....he was super quick and moved very fast. Very shocking.

Have you ever read the book on the murder of Brody? I have not as of yet, but I really want to check it out. I think there has beena couple written on it.

Well, the rawness you speak of was what got me really involved in the early ECW promotion as well. When I was a kid the WWF simply could never match the level of violence and awe that the Midsouth promotion had.....so I was only a casual viewer up until the mid 90's with ECW.....MAN...those days were like Mid south all over again.

Shane Douglas the Franchise....Brian Pillman...Taz...Sabu...The Eliminators....Cactus Jack....New Jack....

It was AWESOME....and then WWF bought them out and absorbed them as they always do. :'(
