That's the first funny thing I've seen from that show. The few clips I've seen have been tedious but I'll give it another shot.

Well, look at the titles of some of his segments:

• "State Legislatures and ALEC"
• "Civil Forfeiture"
• "Scottish Independence"
• "Predatory Lending"
• "Erdogan's Grand Palace"

He has a very clear target audience, and it's decidedly educated and left-wing.

It's not his leanings that aren't funny. And I consider myself educated.

Plenty of left wing comics are funny: John Stewart and Bill Maher come to mind. I just find his persona to be oppressive regardless of the content - kind of condescending without being funny or brilliant.

Well, yeah. John Oliver is more edutainment than entertainment. Stewart and Maher are mostly entertainment/shock-jock-style shows.

Um, no. Totally different comedians before they got into politics, and while Russel Brand sounds like he read a couple of Noam Chomsky books and tried to change the world, John Oliver has a host of writers and researchers.
